America Model Yacht 24"
HISTORY: The schooner America was built in William Brown's shipyard in 1851. It was designed by George Steers for Commodore John Cox Stevens and a syndicate from the Yacht Club of New York. America is still the most important and famous name in the history of the world yachting. The America raced and won against 14 of Britain's fastest yachts. She was so much faster than them that the British believed it had a hidden propeller. The New York Yacht Club challenged the world to race for what became "The America's Cup". The 19th century racing yacht, America, was given its name after the first international sailing trophy that it won - the America's Cup. On Aug 22, 1851, the America won by over 20 minutes in the Royal Yacht Squadron's 53 mile regatta around the Isle of Wight, capturing the "One Hundred Sovereign Cup." Spectating at the race, Queen Victoria asked an attendant who was second, and recieved the famous reply: "There is no second, your Majesty."
